The Magnolia Cup in support of Smart Works

My Story

I am thrilled to be racing in The 2021 Magnolia Cup, in support of Smart Works.

Glorious Goodwood has a special magic for me, with its incomparable views, sparkling atmosphere and long history, so to gallop up the finish straight as a jockey will be an experience to remember. I have ridden all my life, mainly hunting, with polo at university and Western riding on a ranch in Wyoming thrown in, but I have never taken part in a race such as this, nor, indeed, have I ridden a racehorse, except long-retired ones! Training is all-consuming, but to have a goal to work towards, especially in these strange times, is tremendously exciting.

When not working on my fitness for the race, I am chief sub-editor of and contributor to Country Life magazine. I also write for The Field and Horse & Hound, on everything from archery to hunting in Ireland and from ferrets to San Francisco. This is going to be a very busy summer, but it is definitely worth it, especially for such a good cause as Smart Works.

The funds raised through the race will go towards helping unemployed women across the UK to get the job and transform their lives.

Smart Works is a UK charity that provides high quality interview clothes and training to unemployed women in need. Through the power of clothes and confidence, Smart Works allows a woman to be her best at a crucial moment in her life, before her job interview. 65% clients get the job within a month of their appointment.

In 2019, 43% Smart Works clients had been unemployed for over a year, and almost half had applied for over 20 jobs, creating a significant lack of confidence. In the wake of COVID-19 and with unemployment increasing further, the Smart Works service is anticipated to be busier than ever before.

It is the charity's mission to ensure any women in need of its help can find her way to Smart Works.

Please help me in supporting them to achieve this. I would be grateful for anything you can give towards sponsoring me for The Magnolia Cup. Please share this page far and wide so I can fundraise as much as possible.
